* test: the component suite has not run since cypress 15, on any machine Six component spec files -- 334 tests, including the 4,300-line layout suite -- could not start. Cypress exited before printing anything, and under its default Electron browser it did not even do that: it hung at 0% CPU until killed. Chrome prints the error in seconds, which is the only reason this was findable. Three things broke, all of them from the 13.17.0 -> 15.20.0 bump. `baseUrl: "src"`. Cypress 15 loads its config with tsx, and tsx honours tsconfig path resolution. Cypress requires Node's core `events` module; with that baseUrl the bare specifier resolves against `src`, and on a case-insensitive filesystem it matches `src/Events.js`. That file imports the app, so the whole component tree was required in Node: JSX in `.js` files, which esbuild will not parse. This is why CI stayed green while every local run died. Linux is case-sensitive, `events` never matched `Events.js`, and it resolved to the built-in. The baseUrl buys nothing -- there is not one absolute import in the codebase -- so it goes. `framework: "create-react-app"`. Cypress 14 removed that dev server; the handler is in the 13.17.0 binary and absent from 15. The webpack config is handed over explicitly now, taken from react-scripts so components compile exactly as `npm start` compiles them. Two things follow from that: `webpack-dev-server` 5 is a devDependency because Cypress requires 5 and react-scripts pins 4 (npm nests react-scripts' copy, and the production build is unchanged), and babel-loader is widened to `cypress/`, which react-scripts does not compile -- the support file is JSX and was reaching babel with no preset. The suite ran nowhere. `cypress run` means e2e -- its specPattern is `cypress/e2e/**` -- and these specs sit beside the components in `src`, so no job has ever executed them. A `cypress-component-tests` job runs them now; without it this breaks again in silence. One test fails the moment the suite can run, and it is mine, from #660: it asserted the URL column is the widest in the row. It is not, and never was -- at that width the fixed columns take ~307px of 400, leaving the URL ~93 against Control's 146. It shipped green because nothing could run it. It asserts a usable remainder instead. 334 component tests pass, 69 suites / 1214 jest tests pass, `npm run build` is clean. * review: an assertion with a floor, and comments that told the story instead of the rule The leftover-width test had a lower bound and nothing else, so it passed on any column wide enough to have padding -- including one that had grown, which is what losing table-layout: fixed does. It measures the leftover now: the sized columns are held to the widths they declare, and the truncating column to exactly what they did not take. Comments in the config, the CI job and the spec cut back to the rule a reader needs. The version history and the measurements are in the PR. |

WROLPi
Create your own off-grid library.
WROLPi is a self-contained collection of software to help you survive the world Without Rule of Law.
WROLPi is intended to be run on a Raspberry Pi with an optional external drive attached. It serves up it's own Wi-Fi network so that any user with a laptop/tablet/phone can connect and use the library created by the maintainer.

Try WROLPi!
You can try out WROLPi by running the docker containers.
- Install docker-ce and docker-compose
- Copy the latest WROLPi code.
git clone https://github.com/lrnselfreliance/wrolpi.git
- Change directory into the code base.
cd wrolpi
- Initialize git submodules
git submodule update --init
- Build the containers.
docker-compose build --parallel
- Create volumes.
docker volume create --name=openstreetmap-datadocker volume create --name=openstreetmap-rendered-tiles
- Initialize the database (SQLite in the media directory).
docker-compose run --rm api db upgrade
- Start the docker containers.
docker-compose up
- Browse to WROLPi.
More Docker documentation is available in docker/README.md
Install WROLPi
Full installation instructions are in INSTALL.md. Pick the option that matches your hardware:
- WROLPi Portable (Live USB) — boot a complete WROLPi from a USB stick on any x86 PC or laptop. Nothing is installed to the computer; the first boot creates a persistence partition on the USB so your library, database, and configuration survive reboots.
- Debian 12 — install WROLPi onto an x86 PC or laptop.
- Raspberry Pi — install WROLPi onto a Raspberry Pi with an external drive.
- Docker — run the WROLPi containers on an existing Linux host.
Charter
Guiding Principals
- Storage is cheaper than power.
- Two is one, one is none.
- Run silently.
- Primary, secondary, tertiary.
- Secure as a bookshelf in your home.
Physical properties
- A WROLPi instance should be capable of running with a minimal of hardware:
- Raspberry Pi
- SD card
- External USB hard drive
- Power supply and cables
- Wi-Fi USER device such as a phone, tablet, or laptop.
- A WROLPi instance should consume a minimal amount of electricity during WROL event. It is expected power will be scarce when WROLPi is needed most.
User expectations
- A WROLPi instance should be run and maintained by a person (MAINTAINER) with a moderate amount of Linux and Raspberry Pi experience. It is expected that they should be able to do this using only the documentation on their WROLPi.
Software properties and capabilities
- A WROLPi instance should be able to "factory-reset" itself without any outside services.
- WROLPi should function completely without any internet services.
- A user should have easy access to their data if WROLPi fails:
- For example, a user can watch their videos by navigating a short and intuitive directory structure and opening the video in their preferred video player.
- WROLPi should be self-documented. The UI should contain a tutorial for USERS as well as the MAINTAINER.
- If the UI isn't functional, the code should be documented such that a user can restore functionality.
- WROLPi should favor pre-processing, rather than processing during a WROL event. Such as re-encoding a video, or processing captions. This is to ensure that when a user adds content during non-WROL time, the processing for optimum performance is already done for a WROL event.
